For 25 years Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne in Corrèze has held a famous strawberry festival featuring the biggest strawberry tart in the world…
It’s an event in which the entire village participates and which attracts thousands of visitors and tourists to its streets. Usually held on a weekend in May, 20,000 people descend on the tiny town to participate in the Festival of the strawberry. The town is famous for producing the little fragrant gariguette strawberries much loved by connoisseurs and top chefs. The locals put on a show with a strawberry market, animations, a market and the main draw – the biggest strawberry tart in the world.
2014 however will see a break in the tradition of the feast of the strawberry in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne. It seems that the former Mayor of the town was not re-elected in the recent elections and in retaliation the committee which runs the festival has walked out in protest and there will be no strawberry festival.
Some say it is to pay back the villagers for not voting the Mayor back in – sometimes you can’t have your cake and eat it….
