Halloween crepes

Pancakes decorated for Halloween

Crepes, or pancakes in English, are perfect for Halloween. Super easy to make and decorate and very versatile! Halloween isn’t such a big deal in France as it is in America but these French crepes are just right for spooky treats.

Makes 6-8 pancakes

125g (3/4 cup) plain flour
Pinch of salt
1 medium egg
300ml (10.14 oz) milk
25g (2 tablespoons) melted butter
Level tablespoon sugar – optional

How to make

Sift the flour into a basin, add the salt (and sugar is you’re using it) and mix.

Make a well in the centre and drop in the egg. Stir with a wooden spoon and add the milk gradually, stirring until it’s all well mixed.

Beat well and add the melted butter, it should be really smooth and creamy.

Heat a frying pan and melt a little butter in it. Ladle some of the mix, enough to cover the base, the French like their pancakes thin. Leave to cook until golden brown, not much more than a minute, then flip the crepe and cook on the other.

When they’re cooked decorate them for Halloween. Drizzle chocolate spiders or pumpkin faces. Add a dollop of cream with some jelly eyes for a phantom topped pancake. Use fruit to create a spooky face. Sprinkle with sugar. And enjoy.
