Unexploded World War II bomb in Marseilles

An unexploded bomb dropped during WWII and weighing 250kg was unearthed in Marseilles, South of France in January 2012.

The bomb was discovered by workmen at a construction site. It was dealt with by bomb disposal experts who called for more than 4000 people to be evacuated from the city as they removed it and carried out a controlled explosion in a safe place off the coast of Marseille.

It’s not that unusual for unexploded bombs to turn up unexpectedly in France, in February 2011, 6000 Parisians had to be evacuated when an unexploded RAF 1000 lb. bomb was found at Boulogne-Billancourt.
