LUMINISCENCE Reims
Travel through the centuries as colours bloom across the walls, light dances along the columns, and music—soaring, sacred—wraps around you like a blessing. Welcome to LUMINISCENCE at the Basilica of Saint-Remi in Reims, where history isn’t just remembered – it’s reborn in light and sound. Running until 16 August 2025, this is no ordinary night out. Tickets are best booked early via the official site, but you may also be able to book them on the day of the event.
Built between the 11th and 12th centuries to house the Holy Ampulla (used in the coronation of French kings for nearly a millennium), and the relics of Saint Remi – this isn’t just a church – it’s a keeper of France’s spiritual soul and the largest Romanesque church in northern France. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the basilica is named in honour of Bishop Remigius, who baptised King Clovis of the Franks (a Germanic tribe who conquered Fault and made it Francia (France) and 3000 of his warriors in 498, setting off a long line of Christian kings. Legend has it that Bishop, who became Saint Remi, received the holy oil dropped from the beak of a dove during the baptism of Clovis. This miraculous event established Reims as the designated site for the coronation of future French kings. In 1793, revolutionaries destroyed the vial, but witnesses preserved some fragments of the glass vial and some of the balm, which are now kept close by at the Archbishopric of Reims.
The 12th-century-style chandelier features 96 candles, one for each year of Saint Remi’s life, whose richly decorated tomb, located behind the altar, is marked by a mausoleum from the mid-1600s. Architecturally, it’s a marriage of Romanesque muscle and Gothic grace, with delicate ribs, swirling arches, and mellow stone that has stood for almost a thousand years.
Forget dusty museum displays. LUMINISCENCE is cutting-edge 3D video mapping that flickers across every corner and curve of the basilica. Arches, stained glass, even the 24-metre-high vaults flicker to life, telling stories in bold brushstrokes of light. As you sit in the nave – wrapped in a 360° glow – and watch the architecture breathe, blush, and bloom, you’ll lose all track of time, though the entire show runs for 50–60 minutes.
Midweek shows come with a powerful digital soundtrack – moody, majestic, and perfectly choreographed to the light. With the extraordinary acoustics of the Basilica and the remarkable light, it’s a unique sensory experience. And on Friday and Saturday, shows feature the region’s finest choirs conducted by Nicolas Renaux. The sound of their singing fills the space with stunning harmonies that feel almost too beautiful to be real – it’s surprisingly emotional.
The performance tells the tale of the Basilica’s humble beginnings, its Gothic Renaissance and royal connections, centuries of sacred ceremony and song, wartime damage, and a 40-year-long restoration.
LUMINISCENCE Reims is an extraordinary performance in a remarkable monument. The cathedral comes alive. History becomes an experience.
