Lille City Guide

lille-city-guide

Lille is like a miniature Paris, it has the same air of grandeur, there’s masses to see and do but it’s easier to get around and discover. Lille is a really friendly and fun place that has a great cultural vibe and enormous gastronomic footprint plus more than a dozen renowned art venues.

Best way to find your bearings: Nip to the tourist office which is located in an ancient building to book a city tour by coach, on foot or by bike (this is a cycle friendly city so it’s a great way to discover it).

Or wander: Collect a street and metro map from the tourist office, put on comfy shoes and check out the architecture, picturesque streets, little squares and the famous Grand Square on foot.

Eating and Drinking: Hundreds, literally hundreds, of restaurants, bars and cafés. For a taste of yesteryear try Barbue d’Anvers in the heart of the city, or for a breath of fresh air and relaxation head to Guingette la Marine, tavern style with real style. Live it up at Lille’s only Champagne bar located in the 17th century Convent Les Minimes or find your own favourite bar – there’s a massive choice. Pop to chocolate shop Meert (27 Rue Esquermoise) not just for the delicious chocolate and famous waffles but to fall in love with the decor, its been there since 1761.

Top Tip: Head to la Vielle Bourse, the old stock exchange to admire the daily second hand book market in stunning surroundings. If you’re there on a Sunday join in the tango dancing under the stars. Don’t miss the Palais de Beaux Arts with its brilliant exhibitions, second only to the Louvre in Paris. Hop on the tram or tube to Roubaix and visit La Piscine museum in a converted public swimming pool that’s an art deco jewel.
